Human Movement Sciences - Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP)

Program Overview

WELCOME TO THE ATHLETIC TRAINING EDUCATION PROGRAM!

Athletic training is an allied health care profession, where Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. The Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) provides students with a diversified education that includes a solid and rigorous curriculum as well as a variety of clinical experiences that prepare them to enter the profession of athletic training. The ATEP is offered by CHS' Department of Human Movement Sciences in cooperation with the UWM Athletics Department and Norris Student Health Center . The ATEP is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE ). UWM's ATEP is one of ten accredited programs in the state of Wisconsin .

Athletic training education at UWM

The program blends didactic (classroom) learning with opportunities to apply such knowledge and clinical skills in a practical athletic training environment under the guidance of a Certified Athletic Trainer. These clinical experiences take place either on-campus with NCAA Division I student-athletes or at one of our off-campus clinical affiliates. Students will work directly with athletes at the high school, collegiate, and/or professional level as well as patients from the general population.

The mission of ATEP is guided by the Department of Human Movement Sciences' Mission Statement, and seeks to provide a comprehensive athletic training educational program for students that not only meets, but also exceeds the educational standards set by its accrediting body. The faculty and staff recognize the importance of providing an educational foundation based upon scientific inquiry and experiential learning opportunities. Additionally, faculty and staff conduct an on-going program evaluation to maintain a state-of-the-art educational experience for ATEP students.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology-Athletic Training is offered by the Department of Human Movement Sciences and consists of 131 credits. Upon graduation, students are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification examination.
