The UWM College of Nursing is a vibrant, innovative environment for teaching research practice and service to the community and the profession. I am pleased to share with pride some recent College highlights:

Research

•  Received research funding in the 2006-07 academic year, from the NIH (NINR) and non-federal sources to support the research of over 75% of CON faculty.

•  Expanded the Knowledge-Based Nursing Initiative, a major project in evidence based practice through health technology, established in partnership with Aurora Health Care (Wisconsin's largest integrated health system) and Cerner Corporation (an international healthcare information system vendor). Funding commitments exceed $3M through 2008 for the initial research project phase.

•  College awarded a highly competitive grant through National Institute for Nursing Research (NINR) to launch the UWM Exploratory Research Center in Self- Management of Individuals and Families.

Academic Programs

•  The Fabulous 40 Scholarship Fund established in 2005 as the College of Nursing celebrated our 40th Anniversary has grown to over $300,000 through the generous contributions of current and retired CON faculty, staff and alumni. The fund, created to support a diverse pool of low-income students, is well on its way to a goal of $1 million endowed dollars. To donate, call 414-229-4189.

•  Launched the third cohort of On-Line PhD students with a summer institute in June, 2007.

•  Launched cohort programs for BSN completion students in partnership with area health systems.

•  Developed a certificate program in Public Health.

Practice Initiatives

•  Expanded the Midwest Nursing Center Consortium Research Network (MNCCRN)- one of only two AHRQ funded non-physician, practice-based primary care research networks (PBRNs) in the nation - to include members from over 30 research intensive universities across the nation and renamed it the Nursing Center Research Network (NCRN).

•  Provided over 13,000 encounters annually to under and uninsured clients through three academic community nursing centers.

•  Completed renovation of the UWM House of Peace Community Nursing Center in partnership with the House of Peace Community Center.

Workforce Leadership

•  Completed second year of the US Department of Labor funded project, State of Wisconsin Initiative to Fast Track (SWIFT) Nurse Educators to test a model to increase the number of nurse educators in Wisconsin in partnership with healthcare employers. (more)

•  Dean Lundeen reappointed to the Governor's Select Committee on Health Care Workforce.

•  Dean Lundeen elected as the first Board President of the Wisconsin Center for Nursing, a newly established not for profit center dedicated to supporting and monitoring an optimum nurse workforce in Wisconsin. (more)

•  Dean Lundeen Co-Chaired Statewide Task Force on Nurse Educator Shortage. Report issued in July, 2007: "Educating the Nursing Workforce: The Nurse Faculty Shortage in Wisconsin."

International and Global Health

•  CON designated as an International Center for Nursing (ICN) International Classification for Nursing Practice Research & Development Center to advance the work on development of standardized classification system for nursing practice.

•  Nursing students created a weekly Spanish Table in the Center for Cultural Diversity and Global Health. Students and working nurses gather to practice their Spanish language skills with an emphasis on improving their ability to serve Spanish-speaking patients. (more)

•  First offering of the CON UWinteriM course to Mexico. (more)

•  Consultation on nursing practice and research provided on site to nursing faculty in South Korea, China, Malawi and Tanzania.

Clearly, UWM College of Nursing continues to evolve in response to the health care needs of Wisconsin, the United States and beyond. In addition, our faculty and staff continue to provide leadership to major policy initiatives that address the elimination of health disparities, environmental health, nursing informatics, and health care interventions for vulnerable populations. It continues to be an honor for me to work with this dedicated group of colleagues, outstanding UWM alumnae and excellent students. I anticipate even greater things in the coming year.
