UWM Bike to Campus Day
Where: 2 Locations- Corner of Hampton and Santa Monica (at the Martinizing parking lot) , Kenilworth within the alley way "Green Street"
What: Riders will take the Oak Leaf Trail from both locations and end on campus at Spaights Plaza where there will be free bike tune-ups courtesy of UBike, free Grind coffee, and educational materials.
Also, all riders will receive a free UW-Milwaukee leg band reflector.

UW-Milwaukee Competes in RecycleMania for the 3rd Year in a Row
Over the next 10 weeks, from January 23-April 2, 2011, UWM will be tracking all of its waste and recycling to compete with over 500 national & international campuses around the world. All materials throughout campus, including all academic buildings, University Housing, the Student Union, and the School of Continuing Education downtown, will be specially recorded throughout the competition. Campuses are rewarded for high recycling rates as well as waste minimization. Help UWM take the trophy this year!
Reduce: Eliminate waste by using a reusable water bottle or coffee mug.
Reuse: Set your printers to double sided, and always reuse extra sheets.
Recycle: UWM recycles across campus. All paper and cardboard, as well as aluminum cans, glass bottles, and all #'s of plastic 1-7.

Food For Thought
UW-Milwaukee’s Semester Long Experience of Food, Culture, & the Environment
In the Fall of ‘10 UWM will explore how food connects us to the environment, our culture, and to each other. Our daily choices reflect our values and personalities, all the while impacting our planet and our health. Through films, workshops, cooking discussions, an art exhibition and introducing UWM’s new “green” bookclub, students, staff, and faculty can engage their taste buds and minds together and provoke a little food for thought.

350 Milwaukee Work Party
10/10/10 Global Work Party- Reduce your carbon footprint
The 350 Milwaukee Work Party is part of the international Global Work Party initiative of 350.org. The goal is to join the international cause to reduce CO2 emissions to 350 parts per million, the number that scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Great job everyone! 115 people took the 350 pledge saving 168.8324 metric tons and 350,920.77 lbs. of CO2.
These numbers are the equivalent emissions from 30 vehicles in a year and electricity use from 19 homes in one year!

UWM Makes the Princeton Review's Green Colleges List
April 29th, 2010--UW-Milwaukee has made the Princeton Review's Green Colleges List! This list is a guide to 286 colleges and universities that have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to sustainability. Milwaukee shares this honor with seven other schools in Wisconsin, including UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stevens Point. The list was chosen by both the Princeton Review and the U.S. Green Building Council.
Criteria for the Princeton Review Green Rating of Colleges
The Princeton Review tallies its Green Rating scores based on institutional data it obtains from the colleges in response to ten survey questions that ask:
1. The percentage of food expenditures that goes toward local, organic, or otherwise environmentally preferable food
2. Whether the school offers programs including free bus passes, universal access transit passes, bike sharing/renting, car sharing, carpool parking, van-pooling or guaranteed rides home to encourage alternatives to single-passenger automobile use for students
3. Whether the school has a formal committee with participation from students that is devoted to advancing sustainability on campus
4. Whether new buildings are required to be LEED Silver certified
5. The school's overall waste diversion rate
6. Whether the school has an environmental studies major, minor, or concentration
7. Whether the school has an "environmental literacy" requirement
8.Whether the school has produced a publicly available greenhouse gas emissions inventory and adopted a climate action plan consistent with 80 percent greenhouse gas reductions by 2050 targets
9. What percentage of the school's energy consumption, including heating/cooling and electrical, is derived from renewable sources (this definition included "green tags" but not nuclear or large scale hydropower)
10. Whether the school employs a dedicated full-time (or full equivalent) sustainability officer
