Great American Music: Broadway Musicals in the Past 70 Years (DVD Course)
Using video presentations by Bill Messenger, we learn about the past 70 years of Broadway musicals. The first session covers the great musicals of the 1940s, including Pal Joey, Oklahoma, South Pacific, and Kiss Me, Kate. Next, explore the reasons the 1950s are considered the Golden Age of Broadway, from Guys and Dolls to The Sound of Music. In the third session, we see how rock and roll affected musical theatre from Bye Bye Birdie to Hair. Our final session, "Big Bucks and Long Runs," looks at new trends and debates their worth. If you can't get to the Big Apple this fall, enjoying this course just might be the next best thing.
Presenter: Bill Messenger, Lecturer at the Peabody Institute of Music of Johns Hopkins University, has taught composition, music theory and music history. He also has performed with nationally known music groups and is a jazz pianist.
