Dr. Murali Vedula worked in industry for several years before he joined UWM in 1997. At Dow Chemical Company, he was involved with both R&D and project management of a contract with Wright Patterson Air Force Base. At Structural Composites Industries, he was Chief Engineer for new product development.

For the past twelve years, Murali has identified professional development needs and offered continuing engineering education courses. Program areas include Elastomer and Plastics Technology, Electrical Engineering, Innovation, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and Six Sigma/Lean. Over the last three years, in response to the change in demographics of work in the USA, he has redirected his Six Sigma Certificate programs to meet the needs of the service industry. These Green Belt and Black Belt certificate programs have been extremely received by its attendees. In addition, last year, he started to offer an Office Lean Certificate program to focus on methods to reduce waste in service transactions. He has been involved with internal training for applying office lean principles using kaizen and value stream mapping to program services at the School of Continuing Education.

Dr. Vedula's latest emphasis is on innovation. This year he is offering three courses on innovation. One on these courses, "Inventive Problem Solving using TRIZ", is applicable to business process improvement in addition to new product development.
